What does this tool do?
The Currency converter turns an amount in one currency into another at the latest hourly reference rate — any of some 170 currencies, including gold, silver and bitcoin — shows the rate both ways, and lists every currency against the one you chose. The arithmetic happens in your browser; only the rates come from the server.
Where do the rates come from, and how often do they change?
From Open Exchange Rates, which publishes mid-market reference rates against the US dollar every hour. Our server keeps one copy an hour; the line under the result says when it was updated, in UTC, and says so when the copy is older than usual.
Why does my bank give a different rate?
These are indicative mid-market rates — the middle between buying and selling, updated hourly. A bank or a card adds its own spread and fees on top, so the amount on your statement will be a little worse than the one here. Good for a sense of the price; not for trading.
Does it store anything?
No. The amount and the currencies you pick are not sent and not kept — the server hands over the rate table and learns nothing about what you typed. Reload the page and it starts from 1 USD to EUR again.
Which currencies are there?
Every ISO 4217 currency the provider lists — around 170 — plus gold, silver, platinum and palladium priced per ounce (XAU, XAG, XPT, XPD) and bitcoin (BTC). Type a code or a name in the table to find one.
Can I see past rates?
Not yet: this page shows the latest rate only. A history chart is on the list.
