About the Tip Calculator tool

The Tip Calculator takes a bill amount, applies the tip percentage you choose, and shows the tip, the new total, and — if you are splitting — the amount each person owes. Tap a quick preset of 15, 18, 20, or 25%, or type your own rate, and every figure updates instantly. The tip is calculated on the bill itself rather than the bill plus tax, which is the most common convention.

It settles the restaurant-table math in seconds: working out a fair tip for table service, dividing a shared bill evenly between friends, or checking a per-person amount before everyone pays. Tipping norms vary — around 18 to 20% is typical for sit-down service in the US, while service is often already included elsewhere — so the tool stays neutral and lets you set the percentage. Everything runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and it is free, needs no account, and works offline after the first load.

Frequently asked questions

How is the tip calculated?

Tip = bill × (tip% / 100). Total = bill + tip. Per person = total / split. We don't tax the tip — tip is calculated on the bill, not the bill + tax (the most common convention in the US).

What tip is normal?

Conventions vary. In the US, 18–20% is typical for table service. In much of Europe, service is often included; a small round-up is plenty. This tool stays neutral — you set the %.

Is anything sent to a server?
